Common questions
Should I do Roth conversions before I retire?
Often the best window is the lower-income years between leaving work and starting Social Security or required minimum distributions. The right amount depends on your tax brackets, Medicare IRMAA thresholds, and how you'll pay the tax.
What is IRMAA?
IRMAA is an income-related surcharge on Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. It is based on your income from two years earlier, so large Roth conversions or asset sales can raise future premiums.
